Welcome!

2006 - 2007 was the
busiest year on record for Athelstone CFS; with a majority of
the calls being responses to emergencies considered outside our
immediate area. This greater demand has resulted in an increased
amount of time and effort given from every member; to meet the
demands of providing emergency assistance.
Congratulations to each and every
member on your continued support!
On a brigade level the Athelstone CFS have welcomed some new members
recently. These members continue to show great enthusiasm and
drive in undertaking the required training of BFF 1(in obtaining
fire-fighter status) as well as the general training conducted
by the brigade.
And finally despite changes to
the CFS dispatch system; it's business as usual for Athelstone
CFS. On July 1st 2007 CFS Comcen was merged into SAMFS Concen
forming the multi-agency communications centre. Superficially;
the only change being that "State Head Quarters" has
now been replaced with the term "Adelaide Fire" when
using radio communications.

As
the fire danger season commenced on the 15th of October this year,
the members of Athelstone CFS were required to commence their
pre-summer training a little earlier than usual for the 2006/2007
summer season.
Therefore
Wednesday night training on the 11th of October was a particularly
busy occasion. In conjunction with the usual weekly checks conducted
on a Wednesday night, every piece of equipment was identified,
checked and tested to ensure that it would be operational for
the up and coming fire danger season.
Then
the following Wednesday on the 18th of October every available
member of the brigade was involved in conducting their compulsory
annual 'burn over drill' requirement as firefighters. This training
exercise required all members to 'get to work' or commence 'mock'
firefighting from their particular appliance. Then during this
'mock fire suppression' a signal for 'potential burn over' was
conducted by a 'continuous yelp' indicating to all firefighters
in the vicinity to cease fire suppression and return to their
appliances.
This
then required members to demonstrate that they could:
- isolate unnecessary
hose lines;
- check that
all members were accounted for when returning to their appliance;
- roll down protective
fire blinds located in the cabin;
- switch on 'beacons'
so that their appliance could be visually located on the fireground;
- press the 'emergency
button' on the GRN radio
- radio through
that crews were undertaking burn over procedures and their current
location; and
- operate spray
bars before the arrival of fire.
Then once their
appliance had undergone 'burn over' and the fire front had passed
they were required to:
- check the health
and welfare of each member;
- radio their
current status on the 'emergency channel';
- exit the appliance
and extinguish any fire on the appliance;
- deal with any
injuries; and
- pack up and
exit the fireground to the designated safe zone for a safety
check.
As each appliance
is setup differently if required each member to undertake the
'burn over' drill on Athelstone 34P, Athelstone 24P, Athelstone
Tanker and Athelstone QAV. This allowed every member to be familiar
with the various differences that each appliance presents.
As this training
is compulsory for every firefighter, it will continue to be conducted
over the next couple of weeks until every member has successfully
completed this requirement.
